Santiago Valiente is the autobiography of Santiago del Ama. It is the story of a boy who was orphaned at the age of 12 in early 20th-century Madrid. He endured a childhood of hard work in which, despite having to leave school to begin working, he never neglected his education, even working nights to pay for his studies.
He lived through the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the Second Republic, the burning of churches, the tragedy of Casas Viejas, the Civil War —on both sides— and the postwar years. These were years in which he nearly lost his life on several occasions and also helped save the lives of others. The book additionally recounts certain firsthand events that constitute a historical first.
Written entirely in fresh, lively and traditionally Spanish verse, the work portrays with humor, emotion and raw honesty what it meant to live through that era as an ordinary citizen.

Le tocó vivir una niñez de duro trabajo en la que, a pesar de tener que dejar el colegio para ponerse a trabajar, nunca descuidó su formación, llegando incluso a trabajar de noche para pagarse los estudios.
Vivió la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, la Segunda República, la quema de iglesias, la tragedia de Casas Viejas, la Guerra Civil —en ambos bandos— y la posguerra. Tras dos años y medio intensos de trabajo de preparación, recientemente hemos estrenado en Nueva York la adaptación teatral de la afamada película de Federico Fellini, La Strada. Esta adaptación fue presentada en español en uno de los teatros hispanos más reconocidos de la ciudad: el Teatro IATI.
La obra se presentó en 12 funciones, del 23 de febrero al 6 de marzo de 2011, co-dirigida por los dos directores más reconocidos actualmente en el ámbito del teatro en castellano en Nueva York - René Buch y Jorge Merced- teniendo una gran acogida por parte de público y crítica especializada.
La obra ha sido recientemente galardonada con dos premios HOLA 2011 a la mejor dirección y a la mejor interpretación (otorgada al actor Israel Ruiz).
Dos meses después del estreno de uno de nuestros co-directores, el afamado René Buch ha sido premiado en reconocimiento a su carrera con la Medalla de la orden de Isabel la Católica por los méritos demostrados en favor de la cultura española, el importante premio Obie 2011, y el Premio del alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York Mr. Michael Bloomberg.
Seguidamente hemos presentado la obra en el TBG Theater de Manhattan (Nueva York) donde la obra ha estado en cartel desde el 22 de octubre hasta el pasado 4 de diciembre de 2011 obteniendo una acogida muy positiva de público y medios especializados.
En Diciembre de 2011 la obra ha recibido 5 nominaciones a los premios ACE 2011 por Mejor Actriz (Drama) para Nanda Abella, Mejor Actor (Drama) para Luis Carlos de La Lombana, Mejor Actor Visitante para Israel Ruiz, Jason Sturm (Mejor Iluminación) y Karina Alós(Mejor Sonido).
Los premios HOLA, ACE y ATI son los dos galardones más importantes dentro del ámbito del teatro latino en Nueva Yok y EEUU..

After two years of intense work, we recently opened our staged adaptation of Federico Fellini’s famous film La Strada in New York City. This adaptation was presented in Spanish in one of New York’s most renowned Spanish-language theaters: IATI Theater.
The play ran for 12 performances between February 23 and March 6, 2011, and was codirected by the two most recognized Spanish theater directors in New York – René Buch and Jorge Merced.
The play was very well received by the audience and the critics who work in this genre. It’s important to mention that through the use of English subtitles and thanks to Fellini’s great appeal, there was a big turnout of English-speaking guests in the audience, sometimes even greater than Spanish-speaking.
La Strada recently was awarded two HOLA 2011 awards for best director and best interpretation (for the role played by Israel Ruiz).
Two months after La Strada opened, one of our co-directors, René Buch, received an award in recognition of his career with a Medal of the Order of Isabella the Catholic for all the work he has done honoring Spanish culture, as well as the important Obie 2011 and an award granted by the Mayor of New York City, Mr. Michael Bloomberg.
Shortly after, we brought our play to Manhattan’s TBG Theater, in New York City, where it was performed between October 22nd and December 4th, 2011. There it received a warm welcome by audiences and specialized media.
In December 2011, our play received 5 nominations to the ACE Awards 2011 for best actress (drama), Nanda Abella; best actor (drama), Luis Carlos de La Lombana; best visiting actor, Israel Ruiz; lighting; Jason Sturm; and sound; Karina Alós. The winners will be announced in January 2012.
In January 2012 it was also nominated to the ATI Awards 2012 presented by the Independent Theater Association of New York for best director, best actress, best actor, best actor in a supporting role and best play.
The HOLA, ACE and ATI awards are the most prestigious awards in Hispanic theater in New York City and USA.
